What I Learnt from Little White Fluffy Clouds

A few weeks ago I flew back from the Gold Coast to Melbourne and saw all these little clouds beneath me.

I was still hurting and thinking about my recent relationship break-up. You cannot just throw fourteen years in a bin and walk away ‘feeling-less’ – even when it seemed that the fact of the ‘end’ was probably best for all parties involved. I was reminiscing about the emotional roller-coaster ride of grief, resentment, regrets, anger, sadness, rejection and loss I have experienced in the last few weeks.  It seemed like my feelings were playing hide- and-seek with each other. When one was gone, the other one popped up, then to be exchange by another.

I was still hurting  –  looking beneath concentrating on this one little cloud, and then my attention swayed onto the whole sky filled with many little fluffy ones – when I had one of my ‘aha’ moments:

What if this one cloud was representing my ‘break up’, and all the other clouds in the sky were little fluffy puzzle pieces making up the picture of my whole life?

I realized that it is totally up to me if I chose to focus on this single cloud intensively, and feel sorry for myself and miserable, or I can look at the whole picture – ALL the many little clouds which all sum up my short visit here on earth. Looking at the big picture, the little single cloud lost its significance! I value it as an important piece in the whole picture but it doesn’t define myself or my life!

I immediately felt better. It also brought me back to the present moment. I was sitting in a plane going home looking at the BIG picture, and it was beautiful in itself!

Change in focus (of attention) = change in perception = change of feelings

So, I encourage you my friends to remember the ‘fluffy cloud story’.

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • Where in your life can you apply shifting your focus, changing your perception in order to change your feelings?
  • Which situation in your life receives too much personal attention and energy and keeps you stuck and feeling miserable?
  • How can you practice this in a relationship? What are you focusing on when you deal with your loved ones?

Well, I will never look at these fluffy little clouds in the sky the same way… – and even the big ‘cumulonimbus’ (thunderstorm cloud) has its purpose, and it will erupt and explode and eventually evaporate into nothing-ness.
